The 1st quarter of the game started fast with the Knights taking their first possession right down the field for a quick score and a 7-0 lead. Eastlake answered just as quickly with Leroy Jackson spinning out of a tackle and running in for the TD. The PAT was short but the Wolves got on the board 7-6. The quarter looked to be over with only 0:44 seconds left after the Wolves scored, the Defense came up big forcing a fumble that Carson Seelig recovered. The offense made a few quick plays and ended the quarter at the goal line after a great throw and catch from Jackson Proctor to Max Verboort.
Eastlake would capitalize on that mistake on the 1st play of the 2nd quarter. Proctor threw a short pass to Zade Thompson for the TD. The Wolves went for 2 and got it with a catch by Jackson making it 14-7. Newport got the ball back and beat themselves a few plays in with a TD called back for holding. Their very next play was another huge gain with a TD saving tackle by Jackson at midfield. The Wolves defense tightened up and made Newport work to get their yards, but they eventually drove the rest of the field and scored on a 3 min drive. They successfully went for 2 as well and took the lead 15-14. Eastlake took over at the 20 and in just 4 plays were on the board again. The 1st play of the drive was a 27 yard reception by Thompson getting the Wolves to midfield. Proctor kept the ball on the next play for another 1st down. He followed with another long pass to Thompson who was tackled at the goal line. The drive was capped off by an amazing one handed catch by Jack Lathwell in the left corner of the end zone. The PAT was good and Eastlake went up 20-15. The Defense was stout on the next possession for Newport with 2 consecutive plays for a loss by Will Doran, Lathwell and Seelig giving Eastlake the ball back at the 45. The Wolves once again wasted no time getting in the end zone and after a big 20 yard Proctor run and clutch catches by Thompson, Proctor found Sam Coomes in the end zone for a TD. The PAT was short but the Wolves still padded their lead 26-15 with seconds left in the half.
Newport started the second half with a good offensive drive but the Wolves stopped them allowing only a field goal making the score 26-18. The Wolves couldn’t answer despite two great runs by Proctor and Jackson. Newport got the ball back, but not for long after a huge sack for a loss by Luke Robertson. The Knights had to punt the ball and Eastlake took advantage this time. We marched down the length of the field with a TD pass to Jackson. The PAT was good and Eastlake took the score to 33-18 to wind down the 3rd quarter.
The Wolves Defense continued to come up big in the 4th quarter including a Coomes sack and another forced fumble and recovery by Lathwell. The Wolves once again capitalized on the Knights turnover and after a few strong runs by Chris Knutson for great yardage, Trent Nicholson threw a perfect pass to a striding Joey Grzetic for a TD. The PAT was good making the score 40-18 with just under 5:00 minutes to go. Newport wasn’t going to give up and was driving the field quickly until Doran closed the door with a huge sack. Scott Maule sealed their fate with the game ending tackle and the WIN.
Eastlake will take on Bothell at Bothell HS next Wednesday at 6:00. Please come out and show your pride.
