The Wolves JV football team traveled to Monroe on the last day of summer to kick off their season with a dominant road win over the Bearcats, 49-12.

The Wolves offensive line and running game looked strong from the opening whistle with Jalen Bright running behind stout blocking from the starting offensive line. The first offensive series put the Wolves quickly into Bearcat territory highlighted by a 20 yd Bright run up the middle. Unfortunately the fast start was stalled by penalties but Nate Evans gave the Wolves a strong punt pinning the Bearcats to their 10 yard line for their first possession.

Monroe didn’t waste time on their first offensive series with a quick 1st down but the Wolves defense answered quickly. After two quick defensive stops, Luke Robertson blew thru the line to give the Bearcats a 5 yd loss and a 4th down. An untimely penalty bit the Wolves again early in the game giving the Bearcats breathing room and a 1st down. Driving to midfield the Bearcats fumbled at the line of scrimmage and the Wolves recovered. The Wolves took over at the 50 and made quick work of the Bearcats defense with consecutive strong runs by Matt Brookshier, including a 15 yard gain, and Nick Robbins. Jackson Proctor capped off the drive with a 5 yd run into the end zone, giving the Wolves an early lead. Nate Evans came in and nailed the PAT, the 1st of his stellar 7-7 night. The Wolves defense ended the 1st quarter holding the Bearcats offense to a quick three and out, keeping the score 7-0 Eastlake.

The Wolves punt returner, Joey Grzetic, put the offense in good position to start the 2nd quarter taking a deep punt to the Wolves 30. Proctor drove the offense down to the Bearcat 20 but the Wolves weren’t able to capitalize and put points on the board. The defense once again answered with a quick three and out. The Wolves stumbled in the next two offensive series with a fumbled snap and interception ultimately giving the Bearcats the ball on the Wolves 2 yard line. After a quick score and a failed 2 point conversion, the Bearcats pulled within one of the Wolves, 7-6 Eastlake.

That Bearcat score seemed to be a turning point for the Wolves as both the offense and defense tightened from that point on. The Wolves started once again with strong consecutive 1st down runs by Brookshier putting the Wolves deep in Bearcat territory. The very next play Trent Nicholson connected with his wide open tight end Carson Seelig for a Wolves TD. Evans came in with another perfect PAT and the Wolves extended their lead 14-6. The Bearcats last offensive drive of the 2nd was quickly stifled by a huge sack by Hunter Bryant pinning them to their own 1 yard line and forcing them to eventually punt. A wobbly punt gave the Wolves offense great field position starting the final drive of the 2nd quarter form the Bearcats 25 yard line. Proctor finished the very short drive with a 15 yd TD run. Another Evans PAT gave the Wolves a 21-6 lead going into halftime.

The Wolves kicked off the second half with a defensive stand that included huge hits from Grzetic and Bright forcing the Bearcats to punt after only seconds into the 3rd quarter. The Wolves started their 1st drive of the half from their own 45 and quickly handed off to Bright for a 36 yard TD run and a Wolves 28-6 lead. The defense continued to dominate with another three and out and turnover on downs.

The Eastlake offense once again answered quickly with a TD pass from Nicholson to a wide open Gavin Wallace extending the Wolves lead to 35-6. The Wolves defense back on the field, decided that three and outs were getting boring so they ended the next Bearcats drive with an Ian Baisler pick six from the 50 yard line to end to the 4th quarter with a 42-6 lead.

One final TD for the Wolves on a run by Brookshier and an Evans successful 7th PAT attempt put the Wolves up 49-6 with just minutes left in the game. Monroe never gave up and finished the game with a 4th down pass and TD. The Wolves closed out the game with a resounding 49-12 victory.
