A New Chapter at Eastlake: My Journey Begins

Hey everyone! I’m Greg Herd, and I’m thrilled to share that I’ve taken on the role of head coach for the Eastlake Wolves football team! It’s a big step for me, one filled with excitement, nostalgia, and a deep sense of responsibility. As I embark on this new chapter, I want to reflect on my journey thus far and what it means to me to lead this storied program.

I found out about the coaching opportunity at Eastlake through Twitter—yes, Twitter! It’s kind of surreal how quickly things can change in life. Once I learned they were looking for a new head coach, I knew I had to throw my hat in the ring. Eastlake is a program with a rich history and a strong tradition, and I see it as a Tier 1 job here in Washington State. It’s a chance to make a real impact, and I couldn’t be more excited to get started.

Reflecting on my own journey as a player, I remember my days at Steilacoom High School. Back then, I was just a kid trying to make a name for myself in a small program. I faced my fair share of naysayers—anyone who’s ever played at a smaller school knows the struggle. But it was during those tough moments that I learned the importance of showcasing my potential. College coaches aren’t just looking for what you can do right now; they want to see who you can become.

That mentality is something I want to instill in my players at Eastlake. I want them to understand that every practice, every game is an opportunity to grow. I had the privilege of playing at Eastern Washington University, where I won an FCS national championship, and I’ve also had experiences with the Seahawks and the Bears. These experiences taught me resilience, teamwork, and the value of hard work.

I recently met some of the players for the first time during a team meeting, and let me tell you, it was fantastic! Seeing about 65-70 kids show up eager to meet their new coach filled me with hope and excitement. It was a great chance to connect and start building relationships with these young athletes. They have so much potential, and I can’t wait to help them realize it.

As I step into this role, I carry with me a unique perspective shaped by my own highs and lows as a player. I had a promising trajectory until injuries took a toll on my career. The reality of football not being guaranteed taught me to appreciate the game in a way I never had before. Now, I want to share that appreciation with my players. I want them to understand that football is not just about wins and losses; it’s about the lessons we learn along the way.

Coaching at my alma mater, Steilacoom, was an incredible experience that prepared me for this moment. I helped the Sentinels reach their first state championship game, and I had the honor of coaching some remarkable athletes, including Emeka Egbuka, who is now headed for the NFL draft. That connection to my past reminds me of the importance of community and mentorship. I want to create that same supportive environment at Eastlake, where players feel valued and motivated to achieve their best.

I’m genuinely excited about the direction we’re heading in. My goal is to build a program that not only competes at a high level but also fosters personal growth. I want my players to leave the field as better individuals, equipped with the skills and mindset to succeed both on and off the field.

As I gear up for this season, I can’t help but feel a mix of nerves and anticipation. The responsibility of leading these young athletes is not lost on me. I’m committed to being a coach who listens, supports, and challenges them to be their best. Together, we’ll build a culture of hard work, dedication, and mutual respect.

I am beyond grateful for this opportunity, and I can’t wait to hit the field with my team. The journey ahead will be filled with challenges, but I truly believe that with passion and perseverance, we can achieve great things together.

So here’s to a new beginning, to the players who will become my family, and to the exciting moments that lie ahead. I’m fired up to be the next leader of the Eastlake Wolves football program, and I hope you’ll join me on this incredible journey. Let’s make it memorable!

Go Wolves!
